After all, it’s a private island in the Bahamas with beautiful turquoise water and plenty of white sand.
But once you arrive, you quickly realize there’s more than one place to plant your beach chair.
So, which Ocean Cay beach is best?
The answer depends on what kind of beach day you want.
After visiting Ocean Cay five times, we’ve learned that there really isn’t one “best” beach for everyone. Some beaches are better for swimming and water activities, some are ideal for peace and quiet, and others put you right in the middle of the action.
In this guide, we’ll break down the beaches of Ocean Cay so you can figure out which beach is the perfect fit for you.

Take a stroll out to the lighthouse! There is a fun bar area and you can also walk to the top of the lighthouse for awesome views. Lighthouse climb can be reserved through your shore excursions.
What Is Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve?
Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is MSC Cruises’ private island paradise in the Bahamas, located about 65 miles east of Miami in the Bimini island chain. Once an industrial sand-mining site, Ocean Cay has been transformed into a stunning 95-acre marine reserve with pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, and a strong focus on conservation.
Guests can enjoy beautiful beaches, water activities, dining, and plenty of places to relax, all with the convenience of direct ship-to-shore access from the cruise ship pier. The island is also home to a marine conservation center, highlighting MSC Cruises’ commitment to restoring and protecting the surrounding marine environment.
Unlike some private islands where you have to take a tender from your cruise ship, MSC ships dock directly at Ocean Cay. That means you can walk right off the ship and onto the island.
And here's something we really like: you can return to your ship during the day whenever you want. Just keep your cruise card with you so you can get back onboard.
That makes Ocean Cay especially easy for cruisers who want flexibility.
Want some beach time? Head to the island.
Need a break from the sun? Go back to the ship.
Want lunch onboard? You can do that too.
How Many Beaches Are There at Ocean Cay?
Right now, there are seven beaches. MSC is currently constructing Sandy Cay which is adjacent to Ocean Cay. This new little island will turn into beaches for Yacht Club and Explora guests. The current Yacht Club Beach looks like it will turn into an Adults-Only beach, which will be a welcome addition to this island.
Rather than getting hung up on the number, the important thing for a visitor is knowing that Ocean Cay has several distinct beach areas, each with its own personality.
And that's exactly why choosing your beach matters.
Let's break them down.
Bimini Beach: Best for Peace and Quiet
If your idea of a perfect port day is finding a beautiful beach where you can kick back and escape the crowds, Bimini Beach might just be your spot!
Because it’s the beach furthest from the port area, Bimini Beach tends to feel a little more peaceful and relaxed. You’ll find plenty of room to stretch out, beautiful open-ocean views, and even a nice spot near the rocks where you can do some snorkeling on your own.
Bimini Beach may be perfect for you if:
You prefer a quieter beach experience
You don’t mind taking a little walk to get there
You love those wide-open ocean views
You’re more interested in relaxing than organized activities
You want to escape some of the hustle and bustle closer to the ship
Our tip: Don’t assume the beach closest to the ship is automatically the best one! Sometimes, putting in a few extra steps can pay off. If you’re willing to walk a little farther, you may discover a quieter side of Ocean Cay that feels like your own little slice of paradise.
North Beach: Best for Swimming and Water Activities
If you're looking for a beach with shallow water and activities, North Beach deserves a look.
North Beach sits in the protected lagoon and is the largest beach on the island. There are plenty of loungers to reserve, including clamshells that are close to the water. Most families stop at South Beach since it is closer, which makes North Beach a little quieter.
This can make it a good choice for people who want to spend their Ocean Cay day actually getting into the water rather than simply sitting in a chair.
North Beach may be right for you if:
You like swimming
You prefer shallower water
You want to try water activities
You enjoy having plenty of space
Water activities available on Ocean Cay can include snorkeling equipment, kayaks, paddleboards, windsurfing and sailing activities, depending on availability.
South Beach: Best for Swimming and Open Space
Just across from North Beach is South Beach.
South Beach is an open area for swimming and water activities. The protected lagoon makes this a perfect location for families to set up camp and let the children play in the sand and the shallow water. This beach has the most loungers for rent and they can be very close together and busy. There are very few free loungers anymore, so if you want a little space for free, bring your own sun tent or set up towels underneath a palm tree. South Beach is also the closest beach to Seakers Buffet and Boho Buffet.
If you rent a cabana for your day on the island, you will find the cabana check-in right at the corner of South Beach and Seakers Cove.
If you want to spend your day moving between relaxing and getting into the water, this can be another good option.
South Beach may be right for you if:
You want open space
Swimming is a priority
You want access to water activities
You don't necessarily need the quietest beach on the island and you want to be convenient to the buffets
South Beach before they rent all the loungers. It is usually not this quiet!
One advantage of having multiple beaches is that you aren't locked into one location. Ocean Cay is designed so you can explore and find the area that fits your mood.
Lighthouse Bay Beach: Best for Entertainment and Convenience
Want to be close to the ship?
Want entertainment?
Want a great view of one of Ocean Cay's most recognizable landmarks?
Then Lighthouse Beach might be your beach.
This beach is home to Ocean Cay's approximately 100-foot-tall lighthouse and is the closest beach to the ship. MSC also highlights entertainment, bean-bag seating and fire pits at this location.
Lighthouse Bay Beach may be right for you if:
You don't want to walk far
You like entertainment
You want to be near the ship
You want to see the lighthouse
You like a livelier atmosphere
This is also a great option for anyone who wants the convenience of being close to the ship. All of the seating is FREE on this beach, but you will need to get off early or come late in the afternoon once a lot of people have returned to the ship in order to grab a chair. There are not loungers, think more of Adirondack chairs and beanbag chairs.
And remember, Ocean Cay isn't necessarily an all-day commitment. You can head back onboard whenever you want, especially when you are so close to the ship.
Sunset Beach: Best for Couples and Snorkelers
The name pretty much gives this one away. Even though you are not allowed to be on this beach as the sun goes down.
Sunset Beach is the island's longest beach, stretching for more than half a mile. It's also a popular spot for relaxing and snorkeling. Sunset beach is the home to 3 bar huts and is very close to Boho Buffet. This beach is very rocky, so don’t forget your beach shoes. It is also on the open ocean so be careful of waves and tides. This beach is not ideal if you just want to swim all day or lay out in the sun. The rocky shore makes for some great snorkeling, but not very conducive to sun bathing. There are not any loungers available to rent on this beach. If you get there early enough, you can find an Adirondack chair and pull it over into the shade of all the palm trees.
Sunset Beach may be right for you if:
You're traveling as a couple
You love to walk along the beach (but you need beach shoes or sandals)
You want a romantic atmosphere
You want another snorkeling location off the beaten path
Our advice: If your sailing gives you the opportunity to experience Ocean Cay after dark, don't automatically head back to the ship just because you've finished your beach day.
The island has a completely different feel once the sun goes down and there are activities on Lighthouse Beach.
Seakers Cove: Perfect for Families
If you pass the Lighthouse Beach and start taking the walking path around the island, Seakers Cove is the first beach you will see. It is a wide open beach area with calm waters. There are not any loungers available on this beach. There are some tables and chairs under the palms, but they are pretty far from the water. These tables and chairs are mainly used for people eating at the food trucks. They do have some games set up with staff there to play such as ping pong. This area is slated to become a family-focused beach by the end of 2027. It will feature a splash pad and playground. It is not too far from the Seakers Buffet and also has a food truck and a bar hut.
Ocean House Beach: Only for MSC Yacht Club Guests
If you're sailing in the MSC Yacht Club, you have access to something most Ocean Cay visitors don't: Ocean House Beach.
This exclusive beach offers an upscale experience with private amenities, including a restaurant and bar, along with butler service. MSC also offers beachfront and ocean-view cabanas for an additional charge.
Ocean House Beach may be right for you if:
You're an MSC Yacht Club guest
You prefer a more upscale atmosphere
You value personalized service
You want a quieter, exclusive beach experience
MSC describes Ocean House Beach as an exclusive Yacht Club experience, so this isn't an option available to every guest. MSC is currently constructing another island experience just off the shore of Ocean Cay
So, Which Ocean Cay Beach Is Best?
Instead of asking “What is the best beach at Ocean Cay?”, we'd ask:
“What kind of beach day do you want?”

And remember, you don't necessarily have to pick just one.
Because Ocean Cay is relatively compact, MSC says the most distant destination on the island is about a 20-minute walk from another point, and golf carts operate around the island for additional convenience.
That means you can explore.
Do You Have to Pay for a Beach Chair at Ocean Cay?
This is one of the questions we hear frequently-and the answer does fluctuate frequently as well. Things were different every time we visited. When we first started cruising and stopping at Ocean Cay, there were plenty of free loungers, you only needed to rent an umbrella if you wanted it. Slowly that has changes and it is very difficult to get a free lounger (unless you are an early bird!).
Lighthouse Beach has a limited number of umbrellas, chairs and bean-bag seating available for no cost.
On North Beach, South Beach and Bimini Beach, umbrellas, loungers and cabanas can be rented for an additional fee.
You can absolutely have an amazing day at Ocean Cay without spending a fortune on excursions. But if you want to snag the best beach spots, you’ll want to have a plan and get off the ship early.
Or, you can do what we sometimes do and take the “no rush” approach! We’ll leisurely make our way off the ship, stop at the Boho Buffet for a bite, and then wander down Sunset Beach. We might grab a drink from one of the little bar huts and just sit for a while taking in that gorgeous ocean view.
If we’re feeling like getting in the water, we’ll swim for a bit, then find a spot under a palm tree, throw down our towel and let the Bahamian breeze do its thing while we dry off.
Then, when we’ve had enough sun, we head back to the ship, get cleaned up for dinner and settle in for one of our favorite parts of Ocean Cay: the lighthouse laser show!
Sometimes the best cruise day is the one where you don't have a schedule. 🌴🍹🚢
Are There Activities Beyond the Beach?
One thing to know about Ocean Cay is that there aren’t a ton of free activities beyond enjoying the beaches, swimming and exploring the island. But honestly, that’s pretty typical of cruise line private islands.
If you bring your own snorkel gear, you can always get in the water and do some snorkeling on your own without booking an excursion. If you’re looking for a little more adventure, MSC offers paid activities like kayaks, paddleboards and jet skis. You can also book an excursion to climb to the top of the lighthouse.
And one thing we’ve noticed after visiting Ocean Cay five times is that MSC keeps adding more things to do. Every time we go back, there seems to be something new to check out.
They’ve added experiences like stingray encounters, painting classes by the ocean and sunset catamaran rides, so even if you’ve been to Ocean Cay before, it’s worth checking the current offerings before your next cruise.
That’s one of the things we like about Ocean Cay. It keeps evolving, so there’s always a reason to go back and see what’s new! 🌴🚢
Can You Eat and Drink at Ocean Cay?
Yes! And this is another area where we think Ocean Cay does a pretty good job compared to other private islands we've visited. They are also planning to add 4 more eating areas in the 2027 expansion!
You’ll find complimentary food options around the island, including the Seakers buffet, Boho Buffet and several food trucks. In our experience, MSC has one of the better private-island food setups.
And it’s not all burgers and fries. If you’re looking for something a little healthier, you can find options like roasted chicken, a big salad bar, roasted vegetables, and black beans and rice. Of course, if you're in the mood for classic beach food, you can grab a burger and fries too.
We especially like the food trucks because the burgers and fries tend to be hot off the grill and fresh when you get them. There are food trucks located in different areas of the island, so you don't necessarily have to trek all the way back to the buffet when you get hungry.
And if you're feeling a little fancy, you can even find a lobster roll for an additional charge.
Of course, you can't have a day in the Bahamas without a drink in your hand! 🍹 There are multiple bar huts scattered around Ocean Cay, making it easy to grab something without having to go too far from your beach chair.
One important thing to know: Whether your drink package works on Ocean Cay depends on the package you purchased. MSC's current information says the Premium Extra drink package can be used on Ocean Cay for non-alcoholic beverages and select alcoholic drinks.
Our advice? Check your specific drink package before you cruise. MSC can change what's included, and the last thing you want is to order a drink expecting it to be covered and discover it isn't!
Because nobody wants a surprise bar bill after a relaxing day at the beach. 🍹🌴
This is one of the food trucks available around the island. Even if you are not close to the buffets, you are not too far from a food truck!
What If You Don't Want to Walk Around Ocean Cay?
Good news.
You don't have to turn your beach day into a fitness challenge.
Electric carts operate on a regular route around the island, and the island has walking paths and clear signage.
Ocean Cay is also ADA compliant, with beach wheelchairs available upon request at the pier.
That can make exploring the island much easier for guests who have mobility concerns.
Can you stay at Ocean Cay after dark?
Some MSC sailings stay late or overnight at Ocean Cay. The exact schedule depends on the ship and itinerary. If your sailing stays after dark, there will be a beach party with DJ and fire pits on the Lighthouse Beach. You are not allowed to go to other parts of the island. The Lighthouse laser show is not to be missed! You can watch from Lighthouse Beach, your private balcony, or the deck of the ship. On the MSC Seashore, we enjoy going out on Deck 8 outside of Brooklyn Cafe and then walking forward a little bit until we have a good view. Then, we head back in and listen to the awesome live music in the cafe.
Is Ocean Cay worth visiting?
Ocean Cay can easily become one of the highlights of your MSC cruise! 🏝️ You can spend the day lounging on a gorgeous white-sand beach, jumping into the turquoise water, trying a few water activities, grabbing some great food, or simply finding a shady spot and doing absolutely nothing. And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with that!
What makes Ocean Cay so much fun is that you can make the day whatever you want it to be. Want adventure? Go for it! Want a relaxing beach day? Absolutely. Want to grab a drink, enjoy the views and soak up the island vibes? We’re right there with you!
The key is knowing what kind of day you want and choosing the areas and activities that fit your travel style. Because on Ocean Cay, there really is something for everyone. 🌴☀️
Our Biggest Ocean Cay Tip
After visiting Ocean Cay five times, one of our biggest recommendations is simple:
Don't just follow the crowd.
Your perfect Ocean Cay beach may be completely different from someone else's.
The couple celebrating an anniversary may want Sunset Beach.
The family looking for shallow water may prefer North Beach.
The cruiser who wants entertainment and convenience may love Lighthouse Bay.
And the person who just wants to disappear into a quiet beach chair with a good book may be much happier farther away from the action.
Ocean Cay isn't a one-size-fits-all beach destination.
That's actually one of the things we love about it.
There are enough different areas that you can create the kind of port day you actually want.
There are so many photo opportunities around the island, man-made sites along with the gorgeous natural views everywhere you turn.

If you're sailing on MSC and Ocean Cay is on your itinerary, don't think of the island as simply “the private island stop.”
