If you’re cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line and stopping in Puerto Plata, chances are you’ve seen the Monkeyland excursion pop up—and trust us, it’s one of the most memorable experiences you can book.

We had the chance to experience the Monkeyland Pop Adventure, and it turned out to be one of those “we’re still talking about it” kind of excursions. If you’re looking for something unique, interactive, and just plain fun, this might be your perfect port day.

What is Monkeyland Pop?

Monkeyland Pop is an eco-adventure experience where you get up close and personal with adorable squirrel monkeys in a natural, open environment. Located just outside Puerto Plata in the Dominican countryside, it’s operated by Runners Adventures, a well-known and reputable tour company in the region.

This isn’t a zoo, these monkeys roam freely, and you’re stepping into their world.

Your transportation will drop you off at the entrance and a guide will lead you down a slippery path to an orientation spot.

Getting There: The Journey is Part of the Experience

The excursion typically begins right at the cruise port, where you’ll meet your guides and hop on a safari-style truck or air-conditioned bus. The drive takes about 30–45 minutes and gives you a glimpse into local Dominican life.

Expect:

  • Scenic countryside views 🌴 You will also see a lot of the “reality” of the island.

  • Friendly, knowledgeable guides

  • A few laughs along the way

Our guides shared insights about the culture, agriculture, and daily life in the Dominican Republic—which made the ride feel like part of the tour, not just transportation.

The Monkey Encounter 🐒

This is what you came for—and it absolutely delivers.

Once you arrive, you’ll receive a quick orientation on how to interact with the monkeys safely. Then… it’s go time.

After disinfecting your shoes, you will enter a screen area in the transition to the monkey area.

Then, you will sit down in a covered shelter area where your guide will tell you about the monkeys and explain what will happen.

They will bring the monkeys around one time so you can get used to them. A photographer will take photos, but you are also welcome to take your own.

Then, you’ll be given a small cup of fruit, and within seconds, the monkeys are:

  • Sitting on your shoulders

  • Climbing on your arms

  • Gently taking fruit from your hands

It’s equal parts adorable and hilarious. These little guys are incredibly used to humans, and the experience feels natural—not forced.

Pro Tip:
Wear sunglasses and secure anything loose—monkeys are curious and quick! They will have you put your bags in a bin or you can rent a locker for $5.00. They will not let you take anything into the monkey area.

Is It Safe?

Yes—very. The staff from Runners Adventures are extremely professional and attentive. The monkeys are well cared for and accustomed to human interaction.

There are clear rules in place:

  • No grabbing or chasing the monkeys

  • Let them come to you

  • Follow guide instructions at all times

We felt completely comfortable the entire time.

Dominican Coffee and Chocolate

After the monkey encounter, you will have a chance to wash your hands and gather your belongings. Then they will lead you to a replica home and talk about how a typical Dominican lives. Then you go to a covered shelter where you will see coffee boiling and waiting for you. They will do a demonstration, and you can be a part of it if you volunteer! You will have a choice of coffee sample with sugar or no sugar. We personally like the coffee with no sugar. It is just pure, rich coffee taste. You will also get to taste real hot chocolate and some mamajuana juice(like wine).

Who Is This Excursion Best For?

Monkeyland Pop is perfect for:

  • First-time visitors to Puerto Plata

  • Families with kids

  • Animal lovers 🐾

  • Anyone looking for a fun, interactive experience instead of a typical beach day

If you’re someone who enjoys unique, story-worthy travel moments, this is it.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Duration: About 4-5 hours total

  • Walking Level: Light to moderate

  • What to Bring:

    • Closed-toe shoes

    • Sunscreen

    • Camera or phone (you’ll want LOTS of photos!)

  • You can purchase the photos afterwards in the gift shop. They send you the digital files via email and it cost $35.00 for all the photos.

  • They will stop at a small shop on your way back to the ship. They only stay about 30 minutes.

Final Thoughts: Is Monkeyland Worth It?

Absolutely—this was one of our favorite excursions we’ve done in the Caribbean.

It’s not just about seeing monkeys—it’s about interacting with them in a way that feels authentic, fun, and memorable. If you want a break from the typical “sit on a beach” port day, this is a fantastic alternative. Everyone in our group laughed so much and said it was one of their favorite memories from the cruise.
